Shawano Takes North Division Title; Playoff Pairings Set
Shawano scored in the bottom of the seventh inning
to pull out a dramatic 2-1 victory over Menominee on Wed., July 24 and
clinch its first-ever North Division title and the final spot for the 2002
league playoffs.
Corey Jones drove in the winning run in the
bottom of the seventh and Mike Rickert struck out six in two innings of
relief to earn the victory for Shawano, which claimed the title in just
its fourth season in the league. Shawano's victory will end De Pere's
string of three straight league titles and gives the league three
first-time divisional champions this season.
Shawano will be the No. 2 seed for the playoffs
and host No. 3 seed and West Division champion
Waupaca on August 7. South Division champion
Green Bay Southwest will host the wild card team and divisional rival
Appleton Rebels in the other semifinal. The two winners will meet August 8
for the league title.
